, president obama and mitt romney have both promised to create more jobs in new hampshire. so why are so many business people skeptical about that? >> reporter: fredricka, when you look at new hampshire and there is success at keeping a relatively low unemployment rate, it's because of the reliance on small businesses. this state is known for the high number of small business startups and for the innovation that comes with those small business. when we went to talk to some of these people at the businesses about the campaign promises about creating jobs, they told us, leave job creation to the professionals. two new hampshire small businesses that found a way to beat the recession. one is a free-wheeling tech company, producing code to make e-mail and the internet work better. the other has been in business for five generations. >> i manufacture steel phonographic needles. >> they manufacturer antique pins. in tough times, they both found ways to create new jobs. what every candidate talks about, they do. is there anything missing about what they're saying about creating jobs? >> i do

. both the obama and romney campaign hope the numbers will help them in the race. it's too close to call right now. christine romans is going to have a look at it. christine? >> let's talk about what we are expecting in the final economic report before tuesday. in three and a half hours, we'll find out what happens for jobs and the unemployment rate. the expectation is the unemployment rate is 7.9%, picking up slightly with 125,000 jobs added in the month. the trend, though, is what is so important here, right? sometimes you get a little in the month. the trend is what's important. 7.8% was the unemployment rate when the president took office. last month, he's back to where he started. february, 2009, that's the stimulus. then the unemployment rate rise up to 10% in october, 2009 as the stimulus money was being deployed. stubbornly high unemployment. then drifting lower much of this year. we can look at job creation and you can see how jobs have been added now since the end of 2010 consistently, but not robustly. this is where the arguments come about the job market. has it been str

when it's high. this is both ways. if you are mitt romney you get to say, the unemployment rate has gone higher, and it's still too high. if you are barack obama, you can at on another month, i guess -- i don't know how many months now it is of private sector unemployment. private sector employment growth. what it says to you when you see numbers like 171,000, we believe that 250,000 is the kind of number you have to see to really get the economy going, so this one splits right down the middle. we're in ohio, a state that's split down the middle. undecided split down the middle, and a jobs report that splits down the middle. >> do people feel this? do they feel the recovery, do you think, the folks you talk to? >> what do you think, john? >> i think people do have the sense that things are getting better? they're out of this -- we were in toledo four years ago. the unemployment rate was 12.6%. now it's actually lower than the national average. wered 7.5%. there is a sense that things are getting better, so we're just talking to the mayor of toledo, mayor bell. he was saying that the

about the candidates making sure their supporters actually vote. randi, we heard from both campaigns. the obama campaign telling us they've reached tout 25 million people. the romney campaign saying they've reached out to 50 million people since they wrapped up the nomination back in april. we'll see which campaign had the better gut out and vote efforts. we'll find out on tuesday. >> certainly they're focusing more on the swing states in these two dates. how are those races shaping up? >> we've got 3wr57b8d gnu polls that came out a few hours ago. let's start with iowa. out with six electoral votes. the president with a five-point advantage. they're considered the gold standard in iowa. nbc/"wall street journal" poll. iowa gave president obama his first big victory. he ends his campaign tomorrow night in iowa. and let's look at new hampshire, a state very important to mitt romney. that's where he launched his campaign about a year and a half ago. it's dead even according to a granite state poll. we saw it pretty much all tied up in an nbc/wall street maris poll. where does

poll. there are two other polls, both rasmussen and fox, that have romney up by two. it's margin of error. it's close, and it's going to come down to turn out the last undecided voters. i think why romney will win virginia is because he is the one that's going to reverse these sequestration cuts. they're going to devastate the military and cost us $200,000 jobs. the president has been a bystander and won't do that. he is the one with the plan to create jobs and we've got 23 million people that don't have jobs nationally and eight -- excuse me -- $16 trillion in debt. that's what virginians are concerned about and why there's been this momentum towards governor romney. the mishandling of the -- no transparency. 45 days after the fact. it's a great concern. either the president gave an order that was disobeyed by the secretary of defense to provide support in benghazi or he didn't, and i think people want answers before this election on that, so that's what's going to determine the outcome. we got a great ground game, and i expect governor romney to win a close election in virginia, c

obama resumed campaigning today, a day after governor romney went back on the trail. they both planned to hold virtually nonstop events between now and tuesday. the race still considered too close to call of cnn's latest poll shows president obama ahead by one point. 48-47%. a national poll. the poll in the state of colorado, the new international poll shows 15% of likely polls backing obama. that's within the sampling number. 49-45, also within the margin of error. now today, governor romney's camp said he will campaign in pennsylvania on sunday. they claimed the deep blue key stone state is in play. they said the same thing in a memo but didn't cite any particular data. the obama campaign called it a sign of desperation on their part. joining me now with the raw politics, chief white house correspondent, jessica yellin, and jim acosta and correspondent john king. >> the storm has been a real curveball for candidates. how has mitt romney been handling transitioning back to regular campaign mode? does he feel that it may have stopped his momentum? >> what we saw earlier from mitt romne

want to look at the middle. 48% for governor romney. 46% for the president so a dead heat. both candidates are in the state today and will be back to make their case. because of ohio's diversity, what's the demographic composition. among nonwhite voters, he's getting 70% of the vote. cleveland, columbus, here in cincinnati. a growing latino population. the president starts with a head start. the white vote, 44% to 53% for romney. i would say this. if governor romney can keep the white vote closer to 40%, he has a chance and getting minority turnout, that was the president's recipe for success four years ago. >> i know that is so crucial when you look at ohio, what do you see there? >> the reason, it has -- you look at a couple of different places. the north of the state. cleveland, over to toledo. a place where we think we see evidence the auto bailout is helping. across the industrial north. that means a lot of blew collar white voters supporting the president. then you come here to the southwest corner of the state. cincinnati is in hamilton county. it was blue four years ago.

surprise. well, the storm causing both the president and mitt romney cancel several campaign visits. the president was supposed to rally with former president bill clinton in florida. that's not happening. president obama, he arrived back in d.c. got off air force one. you can see the pictures there. quickly got into the motorcade. normally he is flown in a rain chopper from the joint andrews base in maryland, but weather forcing a road trip back to the white house. that often happens when the weather is pretty bad. they don't want to take any security risks or chance there's. the president scheduled to make remarks about hurricane sandy. that is happening at about 20 minutes or so, 12:45 eastern to be exact, so keep it right here because we're obviously going to dip into that. going to carry his speech live, the briefing. he will talk, obviously, about what the white house and the administration is doing, the number of phone calls, conference calls that he has been making throughout the morning and throughout the weekend preparing for hurricane sandy. of course, in the midst of all

was that president obama was wrong. he was not telling the truth. mitt romney had a plan. you can argue which plan was better, but both of them had a plan, and, again, to me if i'm an autoworker or i'm from the company in a management position, i want someone who is president who is going to put in place the tax reforms that they're all dying to have. i mean, they come to me as a u.s. senator and say, look, we have to have tax reform to be competitive. we've got to have lower energy costs and lower health care costs. we need regulatory relief and a level playing field. those are all the things that mitt romney has been talking about. not just recently, but for months in his campaign. i think what he has got is a positive proactive approach for the economy, and that's going to make a difference in ohio. not just with auto companies and other manufacturers, but with folks who are frustrated with where we are. that tends to make a difference at the end of the day, and we'll see that in polling results. >> okay. let me ask you, i don't think we're going to get anywhere on the ad truth
